  • What makes Invesco Portfolios different?

Invesco Portfolios were built to address a variety of investor needs across five goal- oriented portfolios that seek to provide diversification and higher risk-adjusted returns at each level of desired risk exposure. Chris Hamilton is the Head of Portfolio Advisory in the Invesco Investment Solutions team, which provides the portfolio construction expertise behind the Portfolios.

Why are asset allocation products growing in popularity and what is your team’s philosophy regarding asset allocation?

    Chris Hamilton:

The investment landscape's becoming more challenging. Regulatory constraints, market volatility, the change in the way advisors are thinking about their practices; it's the confluence of these factors where we see the emergence of single ticket outcome-oriented solutions. At Invesco Investment Solutions, we've identified this trend and we've taken our investment process to build out a suite of solutions in this space. Our investment process is going to be strategic in nature. We're going to think about asset classes over a long period of time, over a full market cycle, and putting these asset classes together for the benefit of our clients to help them achieve better investment outcomes.

Let’s talk more about Invesco Portfolios in Canada – you employ this robust asset allocation framework, but what truly differentiates them?

    Chris Hamilton:

There are two key differentiators. One is going to be the strength and the breadth and depth of Invesco's platform; strength across active, strength across passive, and strength across factor-enabled solutions. The second key component is going to be the solutions investment process. Sixty-plus professionals around the globe in three different continents, and their sole goal is to help investors achieve better investment outcomes through the deployment of our strategic asset allocation process.

What does it mean for a product or an investment philosophy to be outcome oriented in nature?

    Chris Hamilton:

An outcome oriented solution is focused on a particular investment outcome: growth, income or diversification. Traditionally, we thought about strategies in relation to benchmark. Are you beating a benchmark, are you not beating a benchmark? We think over a longterm cycle, it's important for investors to focus on outcomes versus simply measuring yourself versus the benchmark, so our investments are constructed with those end outcomes in mind. Are we focused on growth? Are we focused on income? Are we focused on diversification? Chances are we're probably focused on all three, and how do you balance those underlying outcomes to help an investor achieve a better outcome over a long period of time?

Briefly discuss some of the support resources available to clients through Invesco Investment Solutions.

    Chris Hamilton:

In addition to the strong intellectual capital we bring to the table with respectability in the portfolios, we also complement that with an array of services that are really meant to better partner with advisors, understand their practices, and understand their clients to make sure we're putting together the best solution for them possible. We partner with hundreds of advisors per year with respect to portfolio diagnostics and analytics. So essentially what that means is we can leverage the strength of our Invesco analytics platform to analyze portfolios for advisors to help better understand them. It's through this research that we developed a very firm understanding of advisors in the Canadian marketplace, how they're building portfolios, what their clients expect, and how do we take those underlying factors to have a better conversation with the advisor so the advisor can have a better conversation with a client.

Factor investing: Harnessing the building blocks of investments

  • Factor investing: Harnessing the building blocks of investments

At Invesco, we believe factor investing has the potential to drive more precise investment and asset allocation decisions to optimize a truly diversified portfolio that targets a specific risk/return objective. Duy Nguyen, Chief Investment Officer and Head of Global Advisory Solutions, discusses why he believes factor-based investing is key to succeeding in the current market environment.

Why do you think factor investing is something that clients need to be aware of?

Duy Nguyen: So if you think about it from a markets perspective, we have very tepid forecasts for both equity as well as fixed income. Alongside that, the constantly changing risk profile of asset classes. You marry that with the environmental changes, or the evolutionary changes that we're facing in the financial markets today, whether that be from a regulatory perspective, from a financial instruments perspective, from a financial vehicles, such as the proliferation of ETFs and alternative strategies. With that as the backdrop and the notion of trying to provide outcomes that meet our investor's expectations, we think that it's a time to evolve our portfolio construction, as well as our asset allocation techniques. Factor based investing is one of those evolutions that we think are going to be key to our ability to succeed in this particular environment.

What type of experience, resources and expertise are needed to successfully utilize factors in portfolio construction and ongoing evaluation?

Duy Nguyen: Understanding factors is quite important. Not just what they are and how they're derived, but also how they affect your overall portfolio. And so a deep knowledge of factors, how they perform, how they interact with each other is key to proper implementation of a factor strategy. The second component that you really need is a platform that allows you to analyze these things. Whether it be looking at your portfolio and understanding how that's positioned or at the final level, which is finding the most efficient way to shift your portfolios from a factor perspective.
